How to Request a Letter of Recommendation
Most undergraduate and graduate programs will ask for one to three letters of recommendation from applicants. If you are getting ready to apply to school, this article can teach you how to request a letter of recommendation.
Requesting a Letter of Recommendation
If you want a letter of recommendation that properly represents your character and demonstrates your industriousness, you will need to ask just the right person. You will want to choose someone who:
• Knows you well
• Has a high opinion of you
• Is a good writer
In general, faculty members, administrators, education supervisors, and employers are all good choices.
Regardless of whom you choose, you will want to ask for the letter of recommendation as soon as you think you may need it. By giving the letter writer a significant amount of time to complete the project, you give yourself a better chance of getting a well thought out letter.
Thanking Your Letter Writer
After you have obtained your letter of recommendation, be sure to thank the letter writer. Chances are they took a great deal of time to brainstorm and write the best letter they could. A verbal thank you is nice, but a formal thank you note is even better. If you are really appreciative, you can send a fruit basket.
