Tips for Choosing a College Major
Choosing a college major can be scary. If you are like most college applicants, you probably aren't sure exactly what career path you would like to take. Making a decision can feel overwhelming. If you need help, this article may make things easier by offering tips on choosing a college major.
By choosing a college major, you agree to attend specific classes that revolve around a particular theme, subject, or area of professional study. Many students assume that choosing a college major locks them into a career field or job for the rest of their life. This is what causes the panic that tends to go along with the decision. However, a major does nothing of the sort. In fact, most college graduates change jobs, careers, and fields several times throughout their life.
When to Choose a College Major
Choosing a major before attending college is a good idea, but it is not actually necessary. Most schools do not require you to declare a major before your sophomore year and some schools don't make you declare anything at all. If you have a pretty good idea of what you'd like to do, you can always declare a major and change it later on if you have to.
The Double Major
If you simply can't decide between one or two college majors, you can always opt for a double major. Many schools have begun to allow this option. In some cases, you can major in two completely different subjects and achieve two different degrees at once. A double major is a lot of work, but it can significantly increase your career options and your chances of future success.
