What Your Grade Point Average Says About You

At some point in your life, you have probably been told that you need to get good grades if you want to go to college. But, many people wonder if that is actually true. Is a high grade point average really necessary? Or, can you get into college with less than perfect marks? Read on to find out.

Most colleges put great emphasis on your high school grades. In fact, college admissions have gotten so competitive, that your grade point average (GPA) could be a deciding factor for the admissions committee. But, what do your grades really say about you?

A Good Grade Point Average
Typically, grade point averages range from 0.0 to 4.0 (4.0 being the best). If you have a good grade point average, you aren't necessarily guaranteed admission into college, but it certainly won't hurt your chances. Good grades show that you have a commitment to academics. A good grade point average also says that you know how to work hard and achieve success.

A Bad Grade Point Average
If you have a low grade point average, it may raise red flags, but you are far from doomed. Admissions committees consider other factors besides grades. Your SAT scores, participation in extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, and application essays will also play a role in the decision. While a good grade point average is important, most schools look for well-rounded applicants to fill student openings and may be willing to overlook poor marks.
